Sysco Environmental Limited attended a Manufacturing facility in Abingdon an Oxfordshire town. This assessment focused on monitoring dust and air quality in the facility. The assessment aimed to evaluate workers' exposure to dust and other airborne substances that might be hazardous to their health. The key areas observed were the PCP and AFP sections, where vessel operatives handle chemical substances and load powders into vessels.
Air quality monitoring revealed that the levels of inhalable and respirable dust, as well as gases like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, were within safe limits and did not exceed workplace exposure limits. This suggests that workers are unlikely to face significant risks, provided current safety measures are followed.
Recommendations from the assessment included improvements in cleaning practices, such as avoiding dry sweeping and using wet cleaning methods to prevent dust clouds. Additionally, the importance of further training for workers on safe material handling was highlighted, particularly in minimising dust during the pouring of powders.
Overall, the project emphasised the importance of maintaining existing controls, while providing actionable steps to further reduce dust exposure and ensure a safe working environment for employees.
