Most construction projects monitor PM10, which refers to particles smaller than 10 micrometres — roughly the size that can be inhaled into the lungs. Larger sites or sensitive locations may also track PM2.5, which are even finer particles linked to respiratory and cardiovascular issues.
Some projects also monitor nuisance dust (larger visible dust) and silica dust if materials like concrete or stone are being cut. Silica is a more serious workplace health concern and often needs specific sampling, not just boundary monitoring.
In simple terms, boundary dust monitoring looks at both visible dust and the very fine stuff you can’t see but still breathe in.
