This project in Oxford involved an anthrax risk survey of historic plaster in a residential property undergoing renovation. The primary aim was to identify any animal hair plaster, which historically could be contaminated with Bacillus anthracis spores, posing a health risk.
The survey focused on accessible areas of the building, particularly the ground floor hallway and living room, as well as the first-floor bedroom. Plaster samples were taken from these locations for analysis. Fortunately, the results showed no evidence of Bacillus anthracis contamination in the sampled materials, providing reassurance that the property does not pose an anthrax risk in these areas.
The report emphasised that while no contamination was found, areas that were not accessible during the survey should be presumed to contain animal hair plaster until further inspected. Recommendations were made to handle any future exposure or removal of plaster with caution, ensuring safety protocols are followed.
Overall, the assessment provided peace of mind for the property owners, confirming the absence of anthrax contamination in the examined sections of the building.
