Ideally, a fire residue survey should be carried out as soon as the property is safe to enter. The longer residue sits, the more it spreads and reacts with moisture and air, increasing corrosion and odour problems.
From a health perspective, early testing helps determine if the building is safe to reoccupy. Airborne particles settle quickly after a fire but can easily become re-suspended with movement or cleaning. Prompt sampling also provides stronger evidence for insurers, as results show contamination before surfaces are disturbed.
In most cases, an accredited consultant can assess the site within 24–72 hours after the fire department releases it.
