In October 2024, a lead paint survey was conducted in a multi-story building in Leeds to assess potential lead-based hazards. This thorough investigation aimed to identify areas with lead-containing materials, especially in painted surfaces such as doors, frames, skirting boards, and woodwork within closets.
The survey revealed that while most painted areas inside the building contain lead-based paint, they are in generally good condition, which reduces immediate health risks under normal building use. However, areas with lead-based paint could pose hazards during renovation or maintenance activities that may disturb these surfaces, potentially creating harmful lead dust.
Recommendations from this survey emphasised controlled handling of these materials, with workers advised to use proper personal protective equipment when engaging with lead-painted surfaces. Regular checks and controlled removal or encapsulation of damaged lead paint areas were also advised to prevent future risks. Through these measures, the building can better manage lead exposure risks and maintain a safe environment for occupants and workers.
