What are the regulations around lead paint in residential buildings?

In the UK, homeowners and landlords have a legal duty to manage risks associated with lead exposure. The Control of Lead at Work Regulations (CLAW) 2002 primarily cover workplaces, but under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS), lead paint hazards in residential properties can be classed as a Category 1 risk — requiring immediate action.

Local councils can take enforcement action if lead hazards are found in rented homes. Property owners are encouraged to identify and manage any lead paint safely, particularly before renovations that may disturb painted surfaces.
