Lead-based paint started to be phased out in the UK from the 1960s, with a full ban on most domestic uses introduced in 1992. However, it was still permitted for limited industrial and specialist applications after that date.
This means many homes, schools, and workplaces built before the 1990s could still contain lead paint beneath newer layers. For this reason, testing is strongly recommended before any stripping, sanding, or major renovation.
