In January 2025, a Mould and Damp Assessment was carried out at a dental practice in Ludlow, following concerns from staff about indoor air quality during ongoing refurbishment works. The issue stemmed from a long-term leak in the Surgery 3 area and an adjoining room, which had caused water damage and mould contamination. Although most affected materials had already been removed, staff requested reassurance about air quality in nearby areas still in use.
Air samples were collected from multiple spaces including Surgery 3 (under refurbishment), Surgery 2 (still in use) and the connecting corridor. The results showed that Surgery 3 had elevated fungal spore levels, likely due to lingering contamination and construction activity. The corridor and Surgery 2 had lower spore concentrations, with levels well below external background counts, suggesting no significant health risk.
The report recommended keeping windows open, using HEPA air filtration units and maintaining ventilation to manage airborne spores.
Overall, the risk to health was considered low and with continued ventilation and air filtering, the practice can maintain a safe and healthy environment for both staff and patients.
