In October 2024, Our team at Sysco Environmental carried out a Mould and Damp Assessment at a property in Shirehampton, Bristol after reports of long-standing damp issues and health concerns linked to poor indoor air quality. The home, a one-bedroom flat with a basement, showed signs of dampness and mould contamination, particularly in the lower levels.
The basement rooms were the main problem, with visible mould and moisture-saturated surfaces. Fungal spore counts in the air were up to 1,600% higher than the outdoor background, especially for Aspergillus and Penicillium, which are known to trigger allergies and respiratory problems. Even in habitable areas like the living room and bedroom, spore levels were significantly elevated.
The report concluded that air quality was poor throughout, especially in the basement, and the risk to health from mould exposure was high. It recommended removing contaminated materials, applying anti-fungal treatments and installing active ventilation systems to prevent basement air from spreading spores through the property.
With repairs and proper airflow, the home can be brought back to a healthy standard, giving peace of mind to future occupants and helping prevent any further health risks from damp and mould.
