In October 2024, a Mould and Damp Assessment was carried out at a School in Darlington, a historic Grade II listed building, to check indoor air quality and pinpoint the source of persistent damp and mould concerns. The focus was on two key rooms: An office and a classroom.
Good news is that the air quality in both rooms were found to be within healthy limits, with spore levels much lower than outdoors. No musty smells, no visible mould, and the rooms felt fine to be in. But the real issue was Damp. High moisture readings were picked up on walls and skirting boards in both rooms, with some walls physically wet to the touch and even showing plaster damage. After further investigations the likely culprit was an unknown leak on the first floor.
The report recommended stripping back plaster, waterproofing the affected walls and carrying out external inspections to tackle the problem long term.
All in all, the risk to health was rated low, but sorting out the damp now will help protect both the building and its occupants going forward.
