There are three main types. Rising damp happens when ground moisture travels up through bricks or walls because of a missing or damaged damp-proof course. You’ll usually see this as tide marks low on walls. Penetrating damp is when water gets into the home from outside — like rain seeping through cracked walls, damaged roof tiles, or blocked gutters. This often shows up as isolated damp patches on walls or ceilings. Condensation is the most common and is caused by everyday activities like cooking or showering in poorly ventilated spaces. You’ll see it as water droplets on windows and sometimes black mould around corners and sills. Each type has different causes, so identifying which one you have is crucial for fixing it.
