Are schools and public buildings required to test for radon?

Yes — schools and public buildings in radon-affected areas are required to assess radon exposure. The Department for Education and HSE both expect testing where buildings fall within designated risk zones identified by the UKHSA Radon Map.

Local authorities, hospital trusts, and other public sector organisations are expected to test all ground-floor and basement areas used by staff, students, or the public. If radon levels exceed the action threshold, mitigation must be implemented and retesting carried out.
