Radon exposure is more common than most people think. In the UK, it’s estimated that around 1 in 15 homes and workplaces in high-risk areas have radon levels above the recommended action level set by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Certain regions — such as parts of Cornwall, Devon, Derbyshire, and the Scottish Highlands — naturally have higher radon concentrations due to the underlying geology.
Workplaces built on or near these radon-prone areas are particularly at risk, especially if they have basements, cellars, or low-lying areas where radon gas can collect. Employers are legally required under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) to assess and manage radon exposure if the property is in a high-risk zone.
