Who regulates radon levels in the UK?

In the UK, radon levels are monitored and regulated by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). They provide guidance on safe levels of exposure and maintain detailed maps showing areas of high radon potential.

For workplaces, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) enforces regulations under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17). Employers in radon-affected areas must assess exposure risks and, if levels exceed 300 Bq/m³ (becquerels per cubic metre), take action to reduce them.

Environmental health teams in local authorities may also get involved, especially when radon affects residential buildings or public facilities like schools and hospitals.
