In the UK, several rules say when and why you need surveys for dangerous materials. The main one is the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, which says that if you're in charge of a non-residential building, you need to find and take care of any asbestos. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 also say that building owners and contractors must make sure workplaces are safe before starting any work. While there isn't one rule for every dangerous material, the law generally wants groups to check for and control any risks that could hurt workers or the public. Doing a survey is often the simplest way to do that.
