Should building projects be continually monitored to achieve BREEAM or LEED compliance?

Yes — at least to some degree. During construction, ongoing monitoring ensures that materials, waste management, energy use and commissioning stay aligned with the chosen credits. Without this, projects risk missing requirements or failing the final assessment.

Once the building is in use, periodic monitoring helps maintain performance, especially for energy and indoor air quality. Some BREEAM and LEED schemes encourage post-occupancy evaluation to confirm the building performs as designed.
