After certification, ongoing monitoring is important to ensure the building continues to perform as intended.
This can include regular checks on indoor air quality, energy usage, ventilation performance, and maintenance of building systems. Some projects also implement continuous monitoring systems for real-time data.
While BREEAM certification itself doesn’t always mandate long-term monitoring, schemes like BREEAM In-Use or LEED O+M (Operations and Maintenance) do place more emphasis on ongoing performance.
In practice, buildings that maintain regular monitoring tend to retain their performance—and value—much better over time.
