A comprehensive indoor air quality evaluation was conducted by Sysco Environmental at a renowned historic entertainment venue in Brighton. The project, carried out in July 2024, aimed to assess the cleanliness of indoor air and ventilation ductwork through microbiological sampling.
The investigation revealed moderate to high levels of airborne fungal and bacterial contaminants in various areas of the building, including performance spaces, kitchens, and air handling units. While some areas showed acceptable air quality, others exhibited elevated microbial counts that surpassed recommended guidelines. The assessment highlighted potential issues with ventilation rates and fresh air supply, particularly in high-occupancy areas. These findings suggest that current air management systems may struggle to maintain optimal air quality during peak usage times.
Recommendations focused on improving ventilation strategies, implementing regular monitoring programs, and enhancing cleaning protocols. The report emphasised the need for consistent maintenance of air handling units and ductwork to prevent microbial growth.
This project underscores the importance of regular air quality assessments in historic buildings, especially those serving as public venues. By addressing the identified issues, the venue can ensure a healthier environment for staff and visitors while preserving its iconic status in Brighton's cultural landscape.
