Monitoring usually involves measuring specific pollutants or general indicators of air cleanliness. For dusts, fumes or vapours, personal air sampling pumps are often used to see what an individual worker actually inhales during a task. Area monitors can measure background levels of particles, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, temperature and humidity.
In some cases, real-time sensors track changes throughout the day. For more complex contaminants, lab analysis gives the most accurate picture. The goal isn’t to catch anyone out — it’s to understand what people are exposed to and whether controls like ventilation are working properly.
