In November 2024, a Hazardous Substance Assessment was conducted at a manufacturing facility in Broomfleet to evaluate dust and hazardous substance exposure levels for employees working in various production areas. The assessment focused on extruder, kiln, press and packing operatives, as well as maintenance and clay preparation workers, all of whom encounter airborne dust and silica.
The results showed that while most areas had dust levels below Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs), certain locations—particularly the maintenance, corner and setting areas—exceeded safe thresholds. Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) exposure was also flagged as significant in multiple work zones, requiring further mitigation.
To reduce exposure risks, the report recommended enhancing local exhaust ventilation (LEV), enforcing respiratory protective equipment (RPE) use and improving housekeeping to prevent excessive dust accumulation. Additional measures, such as rotating job roles and implementing better cleaning practices, were also suggested.
By following these recommendations and continuing regular air monitoring, the facility can effectively manage hazardous substance exposure, ensuring a safer and healthier workplace for all employees.
