Workpalce Indoor Air Quality Survey In Boston

Sysco Environmental Ltd conducted an indoor air quality survey at the BT Fleet warehouse and adjacent garage following staff complaints of headaches, loss of concentration, and dry throats. The warehouse, a single-storey building measuring 15 by 35 meters with a pitched cement roof, is used for storing telecommunication components and is occupied by one operative. The garage, of similar construction and dimensions, serves as a vehicle maintenance area for three technicians.

Both buildings rely on ceiling-mounted central heating systems, which were non-functional at the time of assessment and supplemented by portable gas burners. These burners, connected to 45kg gas cylinders, operated throughout the workday to maintain a comfortable temperature. However, the buildings lacked active ventilation and were sealed during the winter months, exacerbating indoor air quality issues.

The survey aimed to identify the sources of indoor air quality problems and recommended necessary measures to address the symptoms experienced by the occupants. The findings highlighted the need for immediate repair of the central heating system and evaluation of ventilation solutions to improve air quality and ensure a safe working environment.
