Indoor Air Quality Survey - West London

This indoor air quality survey at a historic performing arts building in West London set out to answer a simple question: what’s really going on with the air people breathe every day? Sysco Environmental carried out a full look at the indoor environment — checking for mould, chemical pollutants, ventilation issues and general comfort factors — to give the Academy a clear picture of its current air quality status.

Straight away, it was clear that the building’s age and layout play a big role in how air moves through the space. Some areas have been refurbished and freshened up, while others still rely on old-school ventilation: windows, doors, and not much else. The survey found that a few rooms, particularly in the basement and upper-ground levels, were showing signs of elevated airborne mould spores. Nothing extreme — but enough to suggest that previous damp issues and general airflow limitations are still having an impact.

Chemical pollutants told a similar story. Total VOCs — the general “chemical smell” category often linked to cleaning products, paints, furnishings, and daily activities — were noticeably higher than recommended guidelines in several rooms. It doesn’t mean there’s a single dangerous source, but rather a mix of everyday contributors building up simply because the air isn’t being replaced fast enough.

Carbon dioxide levels, a good indicator of how well spaces are ventilated when people are present, were also on the elevated side. Not harmful — just a sign that fresh air supply needs a boost. The good news? Temperature and humidity were both in a comfortable, healthy range throughout the building, and dust levels were normal.

Overall, the survey showed that the building would benefit from a more robust ventilation strategy. In the short term, simple actions like opening windows more frequently and using air purifiers with carbon filters can make a real difference. In the long term, improving airflow systems and checking past damp repairs will help ensure cleaner, healthier indoor air for staff, teachers and students alike.

Workplace Air Quality Investigation in London Mortuary

Sysco Environmental Ltd conducted an indoor air quality survey at the Uxbridge Public Mortuary, located on Kingston Lane, Uxbridge, following staff complaints regarding odours. The primary objectives were to assess the atmospheric concentrations of formaldehyde and sulphuric acid mists within the working environment and to determine the daily personal exposure levels for employees. The survey included a comprehensive inspection of the premises, identification of high-risk areas, and collection of samples for laboratory analysis. The results indicated that exposure levels were well below the assigned workplace exposure limits. Recommendations included necessary repairs to the air management system to improve odour control and ensure ongoing compliance with health and safety regulations.
