Mould Analysis and Indoor Air Quality Review - Gotham, UK

This project focused on getting a clear, real-world picture of mould presence and indoor air quality at a large site in Gotham, UK, following concerns around general air quality and potential moisture-related issues. Rather than jumping straight to conclusions, the aim was simple: understand what was in the air, how it compared across different areas, and whether the environment showed any obvious signs of ongoing mould problems.

A series of air samples were collected from multiple locations, including both internal and external areas, to build a balanced snapshot of conditions on the day of testing. Looking at indoor and outdoor environments together allowed the assessment to stay grounded in context, recognising that mould spores are a normal part of the outdoor environment and can move indoors naturally.

Overall, the findings suggested a mixed but fairly typical mould profile for a site of this nature and size. There was no single red flag pointing to widespread or uncontrolled mould growth. Instead, results reflected background mould types commonly found in outdoor air, with indoor areas broadly aligning with those patterns. This is an important distinction, as it helps separate normal environmental presence from conditions linked to water damage or poor building performance.

The project also highlighted the value of taking a measured, evidence-based approach to mould concerns. Mould data on its own doesn’t tell the full story; it needs to be interpreted alongside building use, ventilation, moisture history, and how spaces are occupied day to day. This assessment provided a solid baseline that can be used to guide practical decisions around maintenance, monitoring, and reassurance for building users.

In short, this mould analysis offered clarity rather than alarm. It helped confirm that conditions were broadly in line with expectations, while still supporting a proactive approach to indoor air quality management and future risk reduction.

Mould Spore Trap Analysis by Sysco's Laboratory

A recent mould spore trap analysis, carried out by the client and assessed by Sysco's laboratory, provided insight into indoor air quality across multiple levels of the property. Four samples were collected, including an outdoor baseline. Results showed elevated Aspergillus fumigatus spores on each floor, with the highest levels found on the ground floor, suggesting an indoor source likely associated with moisture or water intrusion.

The findings indicate that indoor air quality is affected by elevated fungal spores, which may pose allergenic risks. The elevated spore counts underscore the need to identify and address any moisture issues which could be driving mould growth. To manage immediate risks regular cleaning and improved ventilation are recommended, while a more permanent solution would involve addressing underlying damp or leak issues. This assessment empowers the client to make informed decisions to improve indoor air quality and manage potential health risks.
