A tape lift analysis is a simple but effective way to assess surface contamination. It involves pressing a clear adhesive tape onto a surface—like a wall, ceiling, or ventilation grille—and then analysing what sticks to it under a microscope.
What you get is a snapshot of what’s sitting on that surface. This can include mould spores, dust, fibres, or other particulates. It’s particularly useful for identifying visible growth or confirming whether a discoloured patch is actually mould.
One of the advantages is that it’s quick and minimally invasive—no need for drilling or cutting materials. But it does have its limits. It only tells you what’s present on that exact surface at that moment, not what’s in the air or hidden behind materials.
So, like most things in occupational hygiene, it works best as part of a broader assessment rather than a standalone test.
