Do you need a laboratory to perform total viable count?

Yes, while samples can be collected in the field, the actual analysis must be conducted in a microbiology laboratory. TVC requires sterile techniques, specific growth media, incubators, and skilled technicians to ensure accurate colony counting and interpretation. In-house testing may be feasible in larger facilities with dedicated labs, but external accredited labs are commonly used.
