TVC specifically measures live, culturable microorganisms capable of growing under set conditions. It differs from:

• Spore trap analysis: which captures airborne particles but may not determine viability.

• Molecular testing (PCR): which detects genetic material, including from dead organisms.

• ATP testing: which gives rapid but non-specific results about organic material presence.

TVC is slower but more definitive when assessing actual microbial growth potential.
