Diesel Fumes Emissions Assessment in Tiverton

In October 2024, a Diesel Fumes Emissions Assessment was conducted at a local Devonshire Fire Station to evaluate air quality and ensure firefighters and staff aren’t exposed to potentially harmful diesel exhaust emissions. With fire engines frequently starting and running indoors, the assessment focused on identifying any risks and suggesting ways to improve air conditions.

The findings were reassuring; elemental and total carbon levels, as well as carbon monoxide readings, were all well below workplace safety limits. This indicates that current exposure levels pose no immediate health risks. However, idling engines in enclosed areas could contribute to increased exposure over time, making it a point of concern for long-term air quality management.

To enhance air quality, the report recommended reducing unnecessary engine idling, improving ventilation in vehicle bays, and maintaining exhaust extraction systems. Additionally, promoting good hygiene practices, such as handwashing after potential exposure and avoiding food consumption in affected areas, was advised.

By implementing these recommendations and continuing regular air monitoring, the Fire Station can maintain a safe and healthy environment, ensuring its team stays well-protected while performing their critical work.

Diesel Fumes Emissions Assessment in Bideford

In October 2024, a Diesel Fumes Emissions Assessment was carried out at a Devonshire Fire Station to evaluate air quality and ensure that firefighters and staff aren’t exposed to harmful diesel emissions. With fire engines frequently running indoors, the goal was to check if exhaust fumes were accumulating to unsafe levels.

The good news? Levels of elemental and total carbon, as well as carbon monoxide, were all well within workplace safety limits. This means that firefighters and staff are not at risk from excessive diesel exhaust exposure. However, the report did highlight that idling engines in enclosed spaces could increase exposure over time, even if current readings are safe.

To further improve air quality, the report suggested minimising unnecessary idling, keeping vehicle bay doors open when engines are running and ensuring proper maintenance of exhaust ventilation systems. Encouraging good hygiene practices, such as washing hands and avoiding eating in contaminated areas, was also recommended.

By following these steps and continuing regular monitoring, the Fire Station can ensure that air quality remains safe, keeping its team healthy and protected while on duty.
