How accurate are diesel exhaust exposure tests?

Diesel exhaust tests are generally very accurate—if done properly. The most widely accepted method is measuring Elemental Carbon (EC) through personal sampling, which is considered a strong indicator of diesel particulate exposure. These tests are conducted using calibrated pumps and certified laboratories, so they deliver reliable results.

That said, accuracy depends on proper execution. If the sampler isn’t worn correctly, or the pump flow rate isn’t validated, it can skew the data. Environmental factors like humidity or interference from other carbon sources can also affect precision.

Still, when done by trained professionals using validated methods, diesel exposure testing provides trustworthy data to support compliance and health protection.
