How do DEEE assessments fit into a wider occupational hygiene strategy?

DEEE assessments are one part of a broader occupational hygiene strategy focused on understanding real exposure rather than relying on assumptions. Diesel exhaust rarely exists in isolation. It often sits alongside other airborne risks such as dusts, welding fumes, or solvents, especially in industrial settings.

By including diesel exhaust monitoring within a wider strategy, employers can prioritise controls based on evidence. For example, results may show diesel exhaust is a higher risk than expected, while other exposures are already well controlled. That helps target investment where it actually matters.

DEEE assessments also support a structured approach: identify hazards, measure exposure, compare against guidance, and then improve controls. When repeated periodically, they help track whether changes are genuinely reducing exposure or just shifting the problem elsewhere.

From a practical point of view, integrating diesel exhaust monitoring with other surveys can reduce disruption and cost. More importantly, it creates a defensible picture of workplace health risks, rather than a series of disconnected reports that don’t quite join up.
