Yes, diesel exhaust emissions are considered a COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) risk in the UK. These emissions, often referred to as DEEEs (Diesel Engine Exhaust Emissions), contain a mix of harmful gases and fine particles. Long-term exposure—especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas—can lead to serious health effects, including respiratory issues and an increased risk of lung cancer.
Because of this, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) includes DEEEs under substances requiring risk assessment and control under COSHH regulations. That means employers are legally required to identify who might be exposed, assess the risk, and put suitable control measures in place—whether it’s improving ventilation, switching to lower-emission machinery, or carrying out regular exposure monitoring.
