In November 2024, a Diesel Fumes Emissions Assessment was conducted at Depot in Liverpool to check if workers were exposed to potentially harmful diesel exhaust fumes. The assessment focused on areas where maintenance fitters, cleaning operatives and designated persons work, particularly in enclosed spaces where emissions can accumulate.
The results showed that nitrogen dioxide and monoxide levels were within safe limits, but elemental and total carbon levels were elevated, particularly for workers near running train engines. While exposure wasn’t immediately hazardous, long-term inhalation could pose risks if not properly managed.
To improve air quality, the report recommended reducing engine idling, improving ventilation and ensuring that exhaust systems are functioning effectively. Additional measures, such as better respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and stricter enforcement of ventilation use, were also suggested.
By taking these steps, the Depot can reduce exposure risks, improve air circulation and maintain a safer work environment for employees handling train maintenance. Regular monitoring and proactive controls will ensure cleaner air and better protection for workers.
