In December 2024, a Diesel Fumes Emissions Assessment was carried out at Depot in Newcastle to check air quality and ensure that employees are not being exposed to harmful diesel exhaust fumes. The assessment focused on areas where train maintenance activities take place, particularly in enclosed spaces where diesel emissions can build up.
The results showed that while nitrogen dioxide and monoxide levels were within safe limits, elemental and total carbon levels were higher than recommended for certain roles, especially for fitters and train presentation operatives working near idling trains. This means that while exposure isn’t immediately dangerous, long-term inhalation could pose a risk if not properly managed.
To improve air quality, the report recommended ensuring proper use of exhaust ventilation systems, reducing unnecessary engine idling, keeping workshop doors open whenever possible and improving employee training on protective measures.
By making these small but essential changes, the depot can reduce exposure risks, improve air circulation and maintain a safer working environment for employees handling train maintenance and cleaning tasks
