Sysco Environmental LTD recently carried out a inspection of the local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems at a fabrication site in Northwich aimed to ensure that they continue to protect workers from airborne contaminants. The systems, designed to extract welding fumes and other emissions, were assessed for performance and compliance with safety standards.
The site has three LEV systems in place, each serving different purposes. Two of them are used regularly for welding and cutting operations, while the third is a portable unit for more specific tasks. During the inspection, all systems were found to be performing well, though some suggestions for improvement were made to enhance their efficiency and ensure long-term effectiveness. This included recommendations for regular maintenance, proper operator training, and updating filtration methods.
The report emphasised the importance of keeping detailed maintenance records and scheduling regular re-tests, ideally annually, to ensure that the systems continue to function as intended. Any repairs or adjustments required after this inspection should be completed before the next test in 2025.
This informal assessment underscores the crucial role LEV systems play in maintaining a safe work environment, especially in industries where air quality can be impacted by fabrication activities.
