Recently, Sysco Environmental Ltd conducted a comprehensive fume monitoring survey at an industrial unit in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. This facility specialises in the design, manufacturing, and distribution of life jackets and other marine equipment. The purpose of our survey was to ensure a safe working environment by assessing the levels of various fumes across different sections of the site.
During our fume monitoring assessment, we paid particular attention to the general ventilation provided by roof-mounted heaters, open roller shutter doors, and access doors. These ventilation measures are crucial for maintaining air quality but can vary with weather conditions. We identified several areas for improvement to enhance air quality and safety. Notably, we recommended the consistent use of local exhaust ventilation systems during welding operations to effectively reduce fume exposure.
Additionally, we advised against dry sweeping with brushes, suggesting the use of vacuum cleaners fitted with HEPA filters or wet cleaning methods to minimize the likelihood of dust clouds, thereby reducing potential harmful particulate exposure. Furthermore, we highlighted the need for all employees to be face-fit tested for respiratory protective equipment and recommended health surveillance programs for personnel handling isocyanates.
Our findings and recommendations aim to help the client maintain high indoor air quality standards, ensuring the health and well-being of all employees.
