Hazardous Substances Assessment Project - Great Yarmouth

This project focused on carrying out a practical, real-world hazardous substances assessment at a working catering environment in Great Yarmouth, with the aim of understanding everyday exposure risks and checking that current controls are doing what they’re supposed to do .

The assessment looked at normal day-to-day activities, particularly food preparation and routine cleaning, where exposure to hazardous substances can quietly creep in if not properly managed. Rather than overcomplicating things, the project took a straightforward approach: observe how work is actually done, review how substances are used, and check whether existing controls still make sense in practice.

A big part of the work was about reassurance. Staff were going about their usual tasks, ventilation systems were in use, and general housekeeping was good. The assessment confirmed that the environment was being managed sensibly and that existing practices were broadly effective. There were no red flags suggesting unsafe conditions or poor control of hazardous substances.

That said, the project wasn’t just a tick-box exercise. It also highlighted the importance of keeping things consistent. Good habits like following product instructions, maintaining ventilation, using the right PPE for the task, and keeping COSHH assessments up to date all play a role in keeping exposure risks low over time. The assessment reinforced that even when things are working well, regular reviews help prevent complacency.

Overall, this hazardous substances assessment in Great Yarmouth showed that simple, well-embedded controls can go a long way in protecting people at work. By keeping procedures practical, staff informed, and systems maintained, workplaces like this can continue operating safely without unnecessary disruption. It’s a solid example of how proactive risk management supports both compliance and everyday wellbeing—without making work harder than it needs to be.

Hazardous Substances Assessment in Workshop near Downham Market, in Norfolk

Sysco Environmental recently carried out a Hazardous Substances Assessment at a busy joinery and finishing workshop just outside Downham Market, supporting the company’s ongoing COSHH compliance and commitment to workplace safety. The assessment focused on evaluating employee exposure to airborne substances generated during woodworking and paint spraying tasks — including fine dusts, solvents, and isocyanates.

The project involved close observation of day-to-day operations across several key areas, including woodworking workshops, a CNC cutting shed, and a spray booth. The air monitoring results showed that while overall exposure to most substances was within acceptable limits, wood dust levels were elevated in certain areas and required attention. These findings prompted practical recommendations designed to strengthen local exhaust ventilation (LEV) performance, improve dust control, and promote safer respiratory protection use.

Sysco’s team advised upgrading the extraction systems on high-dust machinery, replacing dry sweeping with HEPA-filtered vacuums, and ensuring fresh-air-fed respirators were used correctly — especially for staff with facial hair. Other improvements, like introducing regular breathing air quality testing, better respirator storage, and refresher training on COSHH procedures, were also recommended.

This proactive assessment not only ensured compliance with UK health and safety standards but also provided clear, actionable steps to improve everyday air quality and worker wellbeing. By taking a preventative, data-driven approach, the company is set to maintain a safer, cleaner, and more efficient workspace for years to come.
