We recently performed a hazardous substances assessment at a shredding facility in Rackheath, focusing on employees' exposure to inhalable and respirable dust. Using both personal and static air sampling, we measured dust levels during typical work activities. Most results were within safe limits, but one sample exceeded the Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) for inhalable dust.
We recommended keeping vehicle doors and windows closed during waste manipulation to minimise dust exposure, enhancing job rotation to reduce personal exposure, and improving housekeeping practices by using HEPA-filtered vacuums or wet cleaning methods instead of dry sweeping. Further personal exposure monitoring was also suggested during higher productivity periods or after implementing new control measures.
Overall, this project highlighted our dedication to ensuring a safe work environment by thoroughly assessing and managing hazardous substance exposure.
