We recently conducted a dust monitoring assessment at an industrial facility in Crewe. Our goal was to evaluate employee exposure to dust and recommend effective control measures. The assessment focused on various areas within the facility, including the picking, despatch, receipts, returns, and Sycamore areas.
Our monitoring targeted inhalable and respirable dust, as well as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide levels. In the picking area, inhalable dust levels ranged from 0.26 to 0.88 mg/m³, and respirable dust ranged from 0.11 to 0.20 mg/m³. In the despatch area, inhalable dust levels were between 0.24 and 1.13 mg/m³, while respirable dust ranged from 0.15 to 0.24 mg/m³. The receipts area showed inhalable dust levels between 0.72 and 0.74 mg/m³, and respirable dust between 0.11 and 0.17 mg/m³.
The returns and Sycamore areas had lower dust concentrations, with inhalable dust levels up to 0.37 mg/m³ and respirable dust levels up to 0.17 mg/m³. Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide levels across all areas were within acceptable limits, indicating good overall air quality.
To mitigate dust exposure, we recommend improving general cleaning around conveyor systems, implementing health surveillance for employees, and ensuring regular housekeeping. Enhanced training on dust suppression techniques and the correct use of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is also crucial.
