When new chemicals or materials are introduced, the first step is to review their SDS and update the COSHH assessment. If the substance is volatile (gives off vapour), dusty, or used in a way that increases inhalation risk, then exposure monitoring is recommended.
Testing should ideally be carried out as soon as the new process begins, or at least within the first few weeks. This early testing confirms whether your controls — extraction, PPE, work practices — are actually keeping exposure at safe levels.
It’s better not to wait months, because if the levels turn out to be high, people may have already been exposed unnecessarily.
