In October 2024, an Isocyanate Analysis was carried out after six urine samples were submitted to our laboratory from a worksite in Swansea. This type of testing helps identify whether workers are absorbing isocyanates (chemicals commonly found in industrial coatings and adhesives) into their bodies.
The lab results showed a mixed outcome. Three of the six individuals had no evidence of exposure, which is great news and suggests that existing control measures are working well for them. One operative showed low-level exposure, which is below UK guidance limits, but should still be monitored in future assessments.
However, two individuals showed exposure above recommended biological limits, indicating that isocyanates had entered their systems beyond safe thresholds. This doesn’t necessarily mean immediate harm, but it does signal a need to review control measures and collect fresh samples to confirm improvements.
The report advised reviewing ventilation systems, PPE use, work processes and hygiene practices. With these steps, the workplace can reduce further exposure and continue to protect the health of all operatives working with isocyanate-based products.
