In November 2024, an Isocyanate Hazardous Substance Assessment was conducted at an industrial facility in Droitwich to evaluate workplace exposure and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. The focus was on a particular area, where employees handle adhesives containing isocyanates.
The results showed that isocyanate levels were below workplace exposure limits (WELs) but exceeded 10% of the threshold, meaning exposure is considered significant. This indicates that while current controls are effective, further improvements can help reduce exposure even more.
To minimise risks, the report recommended installing local exhaust ventilation (LEV) booths, ensuring employees wear properly fitted respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and enforcing strict PPE storage procedures. Additionally, it was suggested to consider substituting isocyanate-based adhesives with safer alternatives and conducting biological monitoring, such as post-shift urine testing, to track exposure levels.
By implementing these measures and continuing routine air monitoring, the facility can further reduce exposure risks, ensuring a safer and healthier work environment for employees handling isocyanates.
