A lead survey was recently conducted at the main entrance gate of a cemetery in Horsham. The aim was to identify and assess the presence of lead-containing materials, particularly in the black paint applied to various parts of the gate. The survey found that the paint contained lead levels between 2.25% and 8.68%, with the condition of the paint being poor and flaking in several areas.
The presence of lead in such high concentrations suggests that working on or near these surfaces, especially during maintenance or removal, could lead to significant exposure. As a result, the report recommended the removal of the lead-based paint under controlled conditions to avoid risks to workers and the public.
Additionally, it was suggested that appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as respiratory masks and gloves, be used during the removal process to minimise exposure. The waste generated from removing the lead paint would need to be classified and disposed of as hazardous waste due to its lead content.
Overall, the survey highlighted the need for careful management of lead-based materials to prevent any potential health risks from lead exposure.
