What COSHH reg 9 actually requires
Regulation 9 of COSHH requires that any engineering control fitted to control exposure to a hazardous substance is examined and tested at suitable intervals — at least once every 14 months for most LEV systems, and more frequently for some specified high-risk processes (e.g. grinding, blasting, jute carding).
What we measure
A competent TExT comprises a thorough visual examination, smoke / dust-lamp visualisation of capture, hood static pressure measurements at every extract point, duct velocity by pitot-static traverse, fan performance and discharge condition, and a comparison against the system's commissioning data or benchmarks for the process being controlled.
Common reasons LEV fails
Hoods moved or damaged, ducting blocked or partially collapsed, dampers shut, fans worn or running in reverse, filters blinded, make-up air starved, and — most commonly — a hood designed for the wrong process or wrong distance from the source.
What the report contains
A signed TExT certificate, a log-book entry, photographs of every hood, pressure and velocity tables, a clear pass/fail by extract point, and a prioritised list of remedial actions where required.
