Local Exhaust Ventilation Assessment at a UK Manufacturing Facility in Cheshire

This project was all about taking a closer look at how well local exhaust ventilation (LEV) was working at a busy manufacturing site in the UK. LEV systems are basically the “at-source” ventilation setups that pull dust, fumes, or vapours away before they drift into the wider workspace. Simple idea — but absolutely critical in real working environments.

The visit focused on observing how everyday tasks were being carried out and how effectively the ventilation controls supported those activities. Some areas were clearly benefiting from strong, well-positioned extraction, while others showed signs that airflow capture wasn’t quite keeping up with how the work had evolved over time. This is really common — layouts change, equipment gets upgraded, but ventilation doesn’t always get revisited as quickly as it should.

What stood out on this project was how engaged the site team were. There was a genuine interest in understanding where improvements could be made and how small changes could make a big difference to everyday working conditions. Sometimes it’s not about huge system overhauls — simple adjustments to hoods, positioning, or maintenance routines can lead to noticeable improvements pretty quickly.

The assessment also looked at general housekeeping, airflow patterns, and how well the ventilation integrated with the wider workspace. All of these things play a part. Even the best LEV system can struggle if surrounding conditions aren’t supporting it properly.

Overall, the project helped highlight where current controls were working well and where practical improvements could strengthen protection even further. It’s a good reminder that effective ventilation isn’t a “fit and forget” solution — it needs regular attention to stay aligned with how people actually work. And when it’s maintained properly, it quietly does one of the most important jobs on site: keeping the air cleaner and the environment healthier for everyone.
