Is LEV testing a legal requirement under COSHH?
Regulation 9 of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)
This regulation requires employers to ensure that Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems are thoroughly examined and tested at regular intervals to ensure they are working effectively to control exposure to hazardous substances.
Key Legal Requirements under Regulation 9:
- LEV systems must be thoroughly examined and tested at least once every 14 months.
- In some cases, testing may be required more frequently depending on the nature of the substances and the risks involved.
- Records of examinations and tests must be kept for at least 5 years.
- The test must be carried out by a competent person, and should include:
- Airflow and pressure measurements.
- Visual checks of hoods, ducting, and filters.
- Performance checks against the original design/specification.
