At Sysco Environmental Ltd, we recently conducted a fume monitoring survey for a client situated in an industrial unit in Farlington, Portsmouth. This facility specialises in the design, manufacturing, and distribution of orthopaedic components, including bone screws, bone plates, Kirschner wires, and specialist equipment in stainless steel and titanium alloys.
Our assessment aimed to ensure a safe working environment by evaluating the levels of various fumes and identifying areas for improvement. Our recommendations included consistent use of local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems to effectively reduce exposure to metalworking fluids and other fumes. Additionally, we advised against using compressed air for cleaning components, as it can create mist clouds that encroach into the operatives' breathing zone. Instead, employees should continue using wet sweeping methods to maintain cleanliness and reduce dust.
Furthermore, we recommended implementing a regular health surveillance program to monitor the long-term health of employees exposed to potential hazardous substances. Our findings and recommendations aim to help the client maintain high indoor air quality standards, ensuring the health and well-being of their employees.
