Sysco Environmental Ltd conducted an electromagnetic fields (EMF) assessment at a manufacturing site in Auchinleck to ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations and assess employee exposure to EMFs. The focus was on various equipment and areas including production halls, switch rooms and workshops, where electrical machinery and magnetic components are in operation.
The findings showed that for most employees, the exposure levels remained well below the safety thresholds set by regulatory guidelines. However, specific equipment, such as motors in production areas and magnetic belts in recycling units, exhibited field strengths approaching or exceeding action limits for individuals at particular risk, such as those with medical implants. No immediate risks were identified for the general workforce.
Recommendations included maintaining safe working distances around high-EMF equipment, clear signage to demarcate restricted zones and periodic EMF monitoring. For individuals at particular risk, specific precautions, such as additional shielding or limiting exposure time were advised. Upgrading older equipment with modern alternatives to minimize EMF emissions was also suggested as a long-term strategy.
This assessment emphasises the importance of proactive monitoring and adherence to safety standards to protect workers especially in environments with high-powered electrical systems. By implementing the recommendations the site can ensure a safe and compliant workplace for all employees.
