In November 2024, a Hazardous Substance Assessment was conducted at a rental facility in Thurnscoe to evaluate employee exposure to airborne contaminants and ensure a safe working environment. The assessment focused on key areas, including cask washing, painting and welding operations, where exposure to hazardous substances like dust, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and metals was expected.
The results showed that while most exposure levels were below Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs), certain substances such as xylene, toluene and nickel, were flagged as significant exposures. These substances, often found in paints and welding fumes, require improved control measures to reduce long-term health risks.
To enhance safety, the report recommended improving local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems, enforcing respiratory protective equipment (RPE) use and adopting better housekeeping practices to limit dust accumulation. Additional steps, such as biological monitoring for solvent exposure and rotating job roles to reduce prolonged contact, were also suggested.
By implementing these measures and continuing routine air monitoring, the facility can significantly lower exposure risks, ensuring a safer and healthier workplace for all employees.
