We carried out a project at a site in Dundee, focusing on evaluating employee exposure to hazardous substances, especially from welding fumes. The key aim was to ensure that workers are safe from long-term exposure to any harmful particles produced during welding processes.
During the assessment, various air monitoring methods were employed to check the presence of potentially harmful materials, such as nickel and iron oxide. The good news is that most of the measured substances, including lead and aluminium dust, were well below the recommended limits. However, exposure to nickel was highlighted as a concern, as it approached significant levels, although still below legal limits.
The assessment also flagged some practical issues, like hot metal being handled before it’s fully cooled, which can release unnecessary fumes. Recommendations included improved ventilation, better use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and regular training for the workers. Overall, the project focused on keeping the workspace safe and ensuring that safety standards are upheld through constant monitoring and practical improvements
