Sysco carried out a project focusing on evaluating the exposure of workers to hazardous substances at an industrial facility in Welwyn Garden City. The goal was to ensure a safe working environment by identifying potential risks and implementing control measures to reduce exposure.
The assessment examined various workplace processes, including welding, grinding and fabrication activities. Air monitoring was conducted to measure levels of metal dust, fumes and other airborne contaminants. The results revealed that while most exposures were within safe limits, some activities, particularly grinding and welding in specific areas, exceeded recommended thresholds for certain metals like chromium, nickel and manganese.
To mitigate risks, recommendations included improving local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems, ensuring proper use of respiratory protective equipment (RPE), and providing additional training for workers on safe handling practices. Other suggestions involved limiting exposure times, implementing health surveillance programs and enhancing housekeeping procedures to reduce airborne dust.
By adopting these measures, the workplace can better safeguard employees' health while maintaining compliance with safety regulations. Ongoing monitoring and adherence to best practices will help create a safer and more sustainable work environment in the long term.
