What training should accompany a welding fume monitoring programme?

Monitoring alone isn’t enough — workers need to understand the risks and the controls in place.

Training should cover the health effects of welding fumes, including long-term respiratory risks and potential cancer risks. It should also explain how exposure monitoring works and why it’s being done — transparency builds trust.

Practical training on correct use of LEV systems is essential. Many exposure issues occur simply because extraction hoods are positioned incorrectly. Workers should also understand correct respirator use, fit testing requirements, and maintenance.

Supervisors should receive additional training on interpreting monitoring results and recognising when controls may be failing.

When workers understand both the “why” and the “how,” compliance tends to improve naturally.
